International Walk to School Day
INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY
On Wednesday, October 7st, 2009, Peachland Elementary School participated in the
sixth annual International Walk to School Day. We joined schools from across
Canada and around the world in a demonstration of support for a cleaner environment,
healthier students, safer streets and a stronger community.
Our school location creates a challenge for us to get a large participation of
students for this event. To give students an opportunity to take part in this activity,
we arranged to have our school buses drop off our elementary students at the grassy
area across from Bliss Bakery at 8:00 a.m. We also encouraged our drop off parents to
do the same. At 8:10 a.m., the group walked along Beach Ave to Trepanier Linear Park
and continued under the highway underpass until we arrived at school.
Prizes were awarded for our participation in this event. Two years ago, our school had
the highest percentage of students, staff and parents walking to school which entitled
us to a pool party for the school. The students loved this prize and we hope to do it again.
We would like to thank our parent volunteers for their help in supervising this event.
We had over 200 people participate today. Thank you to the Westside Warriors for
supporting this event. Eight Westside Warriors walked to school and help us be safe.
Once we arrived at school, the Warriors spent some time in our Primary and Intermediate classes and
read some books and answered a few questions. It was a great day!
